A good speaking course has you talking for a large share of every session, in a small group, with a teacher who corrects you specifically. If a course is mostly recorded videos or teacher talk, it may help your listening, but it will not make you fluent.
What actually builds fluency
- Speaking time. In a group of 20, you may speak for two minutes an hour. In a group of four, you speak far more.
- Correction. Without feedback, mistakes become habits. You need someone to point out the error and give you the better version.
- Real topics. Practising conversations you will actually have: work, study, interviews, daily life.
- Repetition. Using new phrases several times in one session until they come out naturally.
Questions to ask before you pay
- How many students are in a group? Smaller is better for speaking.
- Is it live? Recorded lessons cannot respond to you.
- Is there a placement test? A course that starts everyone at the same level wastes someone's time.
- What will I be able to do at the end? A clear outcome is a good sign.
- Can I try a class first? A trial or demo session shows you the teaching style.
Red flags
- Promises of fluency in a fixed number of days
- Large classes with cameras off
- Grammar worksheets as the main activity in a "speaking" course
- No assessment of where you are starting
How to practise between classes
- Think aloud in English for ten minutes a day
- Record yourself answering a question, then listen back
- Shadow short audio clips: listen and repeat at the same pace
- Learn phrases, not single words: make a decision, not just decision
How our English courses work
Learning Bubble's English courses are taught live online in small groups, after a placement assessment. Sessions focus on speaking with specific correction, and the course you join matches your level, not everyone else's.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to become fluent in English?
It depends on your starting level and how much you practise. Regular speaking practice with correction usually shows clear improvement within a few months.
Are online English speaking classes effective?
Yes, when they are live, in small groups and focused on speaking with feedback. Recorded videos alone rarely build fluency.
What is the best group size for spoken English?
Small groups, ideally around three to five students, give everyone enough speaking time.
Do I need to know grammar before a speaking course?
Basic grammar helps, but a good course teaches the grammar you need through speaking. A placement test shows where to start.
