Start with required subjects, add the sciences and Maths your child may need for future paths, then choose subjects they enjoy and do well in. Keep the total manageable: more subjects is not automatically better.
Step 1: check what is required
Schools in Pakistan commonly require English, Maths, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies (for O Level students), and many require at least one or two sciences. Check your school's rules and current IBCC equivalence requirements.
Step 2: think about future paths
| Possible future path | Subjects that usually help |
|---|---|
| Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy | Biology, Chemistry, often Physics and Maths |
| Engineering | Physics, Maths, Chemistry |
| Computer science | Maths, Physics, Computer Science if offered |
| Business, finance, accounting | Maths, Economics, Accounting, Business Studies |
| Law, humanities, social sciences | English, History or Sociology, Economics |
If your child is unsure, keeping Maths and at least two sciences keeps many options open.
Step 3: add subjects they enjoy
Motivation matters. A subject a student likes usually ends with a better grade than one chosen only because it "looks good".
Step 4: watch the workload
More subjects means more coursework, more revision and less depth. Universities generally care more about strong grades in relevant subjects than about the sheer number taken.
Questions to ask the school
- Which subjects are compulsory?
- What combinations are allowed in the timetable?
- Are subjects offered at IGCSE or O Level?
- What are the entry requirements for A-Level in each subject?
Changing your mind later
Changing subjects is easiest early in the course. If a choice is clearly not working, talk to the school quickly rather than waiting.

Frequently asked questions
How many IGCSE subjects should my child take?
Enough to meet requirements and keep future options open, without overload. Strong grades in relevant subjects usually matter more than the number.
Which O Level subjects are needed for medicine?
Biology and Chemistry are usually essential, often with Physics and Maths. Check the requirements of the programmes you are interested in.
Are Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies compulsory?
For many O Level students in Pakistan they are required by schools and for equivalence. Check your school's and IBCC's current rules.
Can I change IGCSE subjects later?
It is easiest early in the course. Talk to the school quickly if a choice is not working.
