For most students the best plan is a first SAT in Grade 11, after three to four months of preparation, and a second attempt in late Grade 11 or early Grade 12: leaving enough time for scores to reach universities before application deadlines.
Work backwards from your deadlines
US application deadlines commonly fall between November and January of Grade 12, with early deadlines in November. Count back:
- Your final test date needs to be early enough for scores to be sent before the deadline.
- Your first attempt should be a few months earlier, leaving room to improve.
- Preparation should start three to four months before the first attempt.
A sample timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Grade 10 | Strengthen Maths and reading; no need to sit the SAT yet |
| Early Grade 11 | Diagnostic test; begin structured preparation |
| Mid–late Grade 11 | First SAT attempt |
| Summer before Grade 12 | Targeted work on weak areas |
| Early Grade 12 | Second attempt, if needed |
How many attempts?
Two or three is common. Many universities superscore, combining your best section scores across dates. Beyond three attempts, gains usually become small, and the time is better spent on essays and applications.
Fit it around school exams
Students in Pakistan often juggle the SAT with O Level, IGCSE or A-Level exams. Avoid sitting the SAT in the weeks just before a major exam session. Plan the SAT for a period when school pressure is lighter.
Register early
The SAT is offered on several dates each year at test centres in Pakistan. Popular centres fill up, and late registration may cost more or be unavailable. Check dates on the College Board website and book well ahead.
Start with a diagnostic
The most useful first step is a full, timed official practice test. It tells you where you are, how far you need to go, and whether three months or six is the realistic preparation window.
