Which IELTS do you actually need?
This matters more than the fee, because the tests are not interchangeable:
- Studying abroad? Most universities want IELTS Academic. If the course is in the UK and your visa route needs it, you may need IELTS for UKVI (Academic).
- Migrating or working abroad? Usually IELTS General Training. Canada, Australia and the UK each publish which tests they accept.
- UK family or settlement visa? Some routes need IELTS Life Skills at a set level.

How to book IELTS in Pakistan
- Confirm the exact test your university, employer or visa route requires.
- Choose a provider and city. Both the British Council and IDP run IELTS in Pakistan's major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
- Register online and pick a date. Computer-delivered tests have frequent dates.
- Pay within the deadline. The British Council asks for payment within 3 days of registering. Online card payment, bank transfer and bank deposit are common options; check your provider's page for current methods.
- Bring your passport or CNIC as instructed. Your ID must match your booking exactly.
Paying by card? Your bank may add exchange-rate differences or advance tax, so the amount on your statement can be slightly higher than the listed fee.
Cancelling or changing your IELTS date
For standard IELTS, the general rules reported in 2026 are:
| When you cancel or transfer | What happens |
|---|---|
| 15 or more days before the test | Cancel: 75% refund. Transfer: usually free |
| 5 to 14 days before | No normal refund. Transfer: a fee of up to 25% |
| Within 4 days | Usually treated as a cancellation |
UKVI and Life Skills tests have their own refund scale. Medical emergencies can qualify for special consideration with evidence, but approval is not automatic.
Make the fee count
At over PKR 75,000, a retake is expensive. The cheapest IELTS is the one you only take once. Before booking:
- Take a full timed practice test to see your real band
- Check every module against your target, not just the overall score
- Leave enough time to close the gap. Read how long IELTS preparation actually takes
