US universities that accept standardised tests accept both the SAT and the ACT equally. The SAT is digital and adaptive with a calculator allowed throughout; the ACT is more about speed. Take a timed practice test of each, compare the results, and pick the one where you scored higher.
How they compare
| SAT | ACT | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Digital and adaptive (Bluebook app) | Format and delivery depend on the test centre |
| Sections | Reading and Writing, Math | English, Math, Reading; Science is now optional |
| Calculator | Allowed for all of Math | Allowed for Math |
| Pace | More time per question | Faster pace, more questions per minute |
| Score | 400–1600 | 1–36 |
The ACT made significant changes from 2025, including a shorter test and making the Science section optional. Check the current format on the official ACT website before deciding.
Choose the SAT if
- You prefer more time per question and short, focused passages
- You are strong in algebra and like using a graphing calculator
- You want the adaptive format, where a strong first module raises your ceiling
Choose the ACT if
- You read and work quickly under time pressure
- You are comfortable interpreting science data, if you choose to take that section
- You found the ACT practice test more natural
Availability in Pakistan
The SAT is offered at test centres in several Pakistani cities on a number of dates each year. ACT availability and delivery for international students can differ. Check dates and centres on the official College Board and ACT websites before you commit, and register early: seats fill up.
The practical answer
Most students should not prepare for both. Take one full, timed official practice test of each, compare your percentiles, and commit to one. Splitting preparation time between two tests almost always produces two average scores instead of one strong one.

Frequently asked questions
Do US universities prefer the SAT or the ACT?
Neither. Universities that accept tests accept both equally.
Is the ACT available in Pakistan?
ACT testing for international students depends on centres and dates, which change. Check the official ACT website for current availability.
Is the SAT easier than the ACT?
Neither is easier overall. The SAT gives more time per question; the ACT is faster-paced. Take a practice test of each and compare.
Should I prepare for both tests?
Usually not. Choose one after comparing practice results, and focus your preparation on it.
