Storytelling out loud comes before storytelling on paper. This game builds imagination and confidence in speaking, and it works with the whole family.

  • Ages: 6–12
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Skill: Oral storytelling and imagination

What you need

  • Paper or card
  • Scissors and glue or tape
  • Pencils or pens
  • Optional: a printable cube template

Step by step

  1. Make two or three dice. Draw a cube net on paper (six squares in a cross shape), or use small squares of card instead of dice.
  2. Draw a picture on each face. Mix characters (a dragon, a teacher), places (a train, a desert) and objects (a key, a phone).
  3. Fold and glue. Assemble the dice. If folding is tricky, put the squares in a bag and pick three instead.
  4. Roll and start. Roll all the dice. The first player starts a story using at least one picture.
  5. Take turns. Each player adds a sentence using another picture, building the story together.
  6. End it. After a few rounds, someone must bring the story to an ending.

Make it easier or harder

  • Easier: use only one die and tell short stories.
  • Harder: every story must use all the pictures and include a problem and a solution.
