Children can start graphic design from about 10 with a tool like Canva. The fastest improvement comes from four basics: layout, colour, fonts and hierarchy (what the eye sees first). Once those feel natural, tools like Illustrator open up more control.
The four basics
| Basic | Simple rule |
|---|---|
| Hierarchy | Make the most important thing the biggest |
| Layout | Line things up; leave empty space around them |
| Colour | Use two or three colours that work together |
| Fonts | Use one or two fonts, not five |
Most beginner designs improve instantly by removing things rather than adding them.
First projects that work
- A school project cover page: title, name, one image
- A birthday invitation: practising hierarchy (what, when, where)
- A poster for a school event: using a strong headline
- Presentation slides: consistent colours and fonts across slides
- A personal logo: simple shapes and lettering
Canva or Illustrator?
Canva is template-based and quick to learn: ideal for beginners and school work. Illustrator is a professional vector tool with more control and a steeper learning curve, better for teenagers ready to create from scratch. Starting in Canva and moving to Illustrator works well for most students.
Templates: help or crutch?
Templates are a good way to learn what works. The step up is understanding why a template works, and then making your own design without one.
Why design is a useful skill
School presentations, project boards, social media for clubs, and later university and work presentations all benefit. Design also teaches visual communication: getting a message across quickly and clearly.
