About this course
A playful, beginner-friendly introduction to coding using Small Basic. Students learn fundamental programming concepts through drawing, painting, animation and simple games. The course builds logical thinking, creativity and confidence with technology: perfect for young learners taking their first steps into code.

Who this course is for
Ages 10–16 with no coding experience at all. The right starting point for a child who says they are "not a computer person": the first thing they draw on screen usually settles that.
What you will be able to do
- Write and run a working program from a blank file
- Use variables, loops and conditions without memorising syntax
- Debug your own code by reading the error rather than guessing
- Finish with games and animations you built yourself
How the course is structured
Session 1: First lines, first drawing
Something appears on screen in the first ten minutes. Coordinates and commands.
Session 2: Loops
Why repeating yourself is the programmer's enemy, shown by drawing something impossible by hand.
Session 3: Variables and input
Programs that remember and respond.
Session 4: Conditions
Decisions, branching and the logic of if-then.
Session 5: Build a game
Students combine everything into a small playable game to keep.

Yes, and deliberately chosen: it has real syntax and real errors, but a fraction of the ceremony. Students move to Python afterwards without unlearning anything.
Learn Python is the natural next step, usually with a few months in between.

Live online · small group: taught live, never pre-recorded, with sessions recorded afterwards so students can revisit anything they missed. Timings are arranged around school and time zones, and we reschedule when exams or travel get in the way.
