Quick answer

Scratch uses drag-and-drop blocks and suits younger children, roughly 7 to 11. Python is typed code used by professionals and suits most children from about 12. A text language with friendly errors, such as Small Basic, is a useful bridge between the two.

Why block-based coding works for younger children

With blocks, there are no spelling or punctuation mistakes to make, so children can focus on logic: sequences, loops and conditions. It is a gentle way to discover that computers do exactly what they are told: no more, no less.

Why move to text-based coding

Eventually children want to build things blocks cannot do easily, and typed code becomes faster than dragging blocks. Text coding also builds habits, precise typing, reading errors, organising code, that every later language needs.

The bridge problem

Moving straight from Scratch to Python can be a shock: suddenly a missing colon breaks everything. A bridge language with real typed code but gentle errors smooths the transition. That is why our Fun with Coding course uses Small Basic before students move to Python. Read why we start beginners on Small Basic.

Which should your child learn?

  • Under 10 and never coded? Start with blocks or unplugged activities. Try our free at-home coding activities or a free coding demo class.
  • 10–12, new to coding? A beginner text language like Small Basic.
  • 12+ and comfortable typing? Python.

Interest matters more than age. A child excited to build a specific game will push through difficulties a reluctant child will not.

Frequently asked questions

Is Scratch or Python better for kids?
Scratch suits younger children (about 7–11) because blocks remove syntax errors. Python suits most children from about 12 and is used professionally.

Can my child skip Scratch and start with Python?
Yes, if they are around 12 or older and comfortable typing. Younger beginners usually do better with a gentler start.

Is Scratch real coding?
It teaches real programming logic, sequences, loops, conditions, without typed syntax. It is a good foundation but not used professionally.

What comes after Scratch?
A beginner text language with friendly errors, such as Small Basic, then Python.
