Machine learning means a computer learns patterns from lots of examples, instead of being given every rule. It then uses those patterns to make predictions about new things, and, like any learner, it sometimes gets them wrong.
Explain it like this
Imagine teaching a younger sibling to recognise cats. You do not give them a rulebook. You show them lots of pictures, cat, cat, not a cat, cat, until they can spot one on their own. Machine learning works in a similar way, with far more examples and maths instead of eyes.
The three big ideas
| Idea | Simple explanation |
|---|---|
| Training data | The examples the computer learns from |
| Model | The patterns it has learned |
| Prediction | Its best guess about something new |
Why it makes mistakes
- Not enough examples. It never saw anything like this before.
- Unbalanced examples. If it only saw orange cats, it might miss a black one.
- Misleading patterns. If every cat photo had a sofa in it, it might start thinking sofas mean cats.
This is why AI can be confidently wrong, and why children should always question it.
Where children see machine learning
- Video and music recommendations
- Photo apps that recognise faces
- Spam filters in email
- Voice assistants understanding speech
- Chatbots predicting the next words in a sentence
Try it at home
Our free sort it like a computer activity lets children play the role of a machine learning model with everyday objects, and discover how bad examples lead to bad predictions.
Going further
Teenagers who want to understand AI properly can take our Artificial Intelligence for Kids course, and those who enjoy coding can later work with real data in Learn Python.
Our technology courses for kids: Fun with Coding (ages 10–16), Learn Python (ages 12–18) and Artificial Intelligence for Kids (ages 12–16). For younger children, try the free AI Explorers workshop or our free at-home coding activities.
Frequently asked questions
What is machine learning in simple words?
A way for computers to learn patterns from many examples and use them to make predictions about new things.
Is machine learning the same as AI?
Machine learning is one of the main ways modern AI is built. AI is the broader idea of computers doing tasks that seem intelligent.
Why does AI make mistakes?
Because it learns from examples, which can be incomplete, unbalanced or misleading. It predicts. It does not truly understand.
How can I teach my child about machine learning?
With simple sorting and guessing games that show how examples lead to predictions, like our free sorting activity.
