Both formats have the same questions, timing, marking and certificate. Computer-delivered results usually arrive within a few days; paper results take longer. Choose computer if you type comfortably; choose paper if you write faster by hand and like annotating texts.
What is exactly the same
- The content and difficulty of every module
- The marking criteria and band scores
- The Speaking test, which is always face-to-face with an examiner
- The certificate, which does not say which format you took
What is different
| Computer | Paper | |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Type answers as you go; short review time at the end | Write on the question paper; extra time to transfer answers |
| Reading | Highlight on screen; passage and questions side by side | Underline and annotate freely on paper |
| Writing | Type, with a live word count | Handwrite and count words yourself |
| Results | Usually within a few days | Usually takes longer |
| Availability | Often more test dates | Depends on the centre |
Choose computer-delivered if
- You type faster and more neatly than you write
- You want the automatic word count in Writing
- You need results quickly for an application deadline
- You are comfortable reading long texts on screen
Choose paper-based if
- You write quickly by hand and your typing is slow
- You like to underline and make notes on Reading passages
- Screens tire your eyes over long periods
A common worry: spelling
On computer there is no spellcheck, so spelling mistakes still cost marks. Typing does not make you a better speller: practise spelling either way.
Practise in the format you will sit
The skills transfer, but the habits do not. If you will sit the computer test, do your timed practice on a screen so that scrolling, highlighting and typing feel normal on test day.
